"…the distorted image of ideal beauty that is never achievable, though laid-on by the world of the media and advertising." (Riedstra, 2007)

Riedstra's ‘Barbs Series’ was shown as part of the Amsterdam International Fashion Week, 2007 and she was invited to show at the Florence Biennale that same year.

Her paintings speak of the difficulty in present-day society for women to achieve a true and unadulterated identity of themselves.
Riedstra’s own theatrical background, both as a performer and scenographer informs her vision for the three week exhibition, featuring fashion shows and performances on the first 2 nights (by recent Central Saint Martins fashion design graduates) — promising to be an emotive feast for all the senses, and especially the mind.
For the forthcoming ‘Barbs’ show Riedstra invited like-minded UK-based artists whose work deals with similar issues relating to the body and distorted identity.

An exhibition of works by Daniel Jefferies, Dave Anderson, Kate Walmsley, Lizzy Whitehouse, Katrine Storebo, Edward Hume-Smith & Nick Lee

Private View: Friday 29th of August - 6 pm to 11 pm
Exhibition runs from: Friday 29th of August to 4th of September 2008
Gallery Opening Hours: Sat, Mon to Wed: 2.30 pm - 6.30 pm
Last day of exhibition: Thursday 4th of September from 11.00 am to 5.00 pm

Seven artists from London and Brighton have come together to exhibit works in an assortment of media including drawing, installation, photography, film and performance. Each artist explores their own subject in a sensitive, provocative and sometimes humorous series of works engaging our shared experience of life, growing up, imagination and art. What bind the artists together are their individual observations of anxieties concerning modern life and art.

This exhibition explores the journey from childhood to adulthood as expressed in Daniel Jefferies’ fascination with “The contrast of the two worlds - of being in one and staring at the other... of the development of a relationship in which we try to revive something lost”. The boundaries of childhood and adulthood are further explored by Katrine Storebo’s photographs and videos, which invite adults into a spontaneous and playful imaginary world of dolls and toys.

Teasing out our childish fantasies and re-invigorating our imagination and sense of humour, Dave Anderson’s satirical drawings are both quietly disturbing and incredibly witty. His animation ‘The Grand National’ (2004) sees a grimy, faceless fellow pelvic thrusting along to the National Anthem...with no pants on. This work made it to the finals of the 2004 Jerwood Drawing Prize. Anderson’s drawings, animations and performances give unforgiving exposure to the darker recesses of our minds and our lives.

Kate Walmlsey’s installations express an interest in the perception of artworks, in the connotations of the artistic medium and its effect on the viewer’s expectations. Walmsley’s video installation Still Life, 2004, plays with the concept of genre in painting and our response to symbolic references.

This is just a taste of the ‘Exhibiting Thoughts’ exhibition, for which all seven artists will be creating new work.

The forthcoming show 'Street Expression' is all about how one chooses to express oneself visually.
The exhibition will feature live art performances, fashion shows, a workshop, installations and work hung on walls.

Graffiti, while illegal can be a powerful tool in making a huge visual impact and sending us messages concerning politics, emotions, or whatever else is on the creators mind. The best Graffiti causes us to wonder technically "how did they do that?" and speculate what the piece is about and why it was done.

Comics have been used to tell stories about the human condition and psyche and appeal to everyone. Through their pages we are transported to other worlds where we can be anyone we want to be therefore learning a little about who we are and the world around us through analogy.

Alternative, urban and Harajuku fashion can particularly help send messages about beliefs, interests and status.

Saturday 27th September 2.30 to 5pm: Workshop
Participants in the workshop will be customising t - shirts, and custom vinyl art toy blanks such as the
mini Munny and Dunny blanks. These will be limited to 20 blanks.Tamo and Qee figures will also be
available in addition to templates for the figures. There will also be a competition where participants
will get to win a Munny blank and a one off t-shirt made by the curator. All materials and instructions
are included.
Workshops cost £12 per adult and £6 per child aged 12 - 15 years. Under 12 year olds go free.

By exhibiting the work of graffiti, comic/graphic artists, designers, and illustrators, creativity will be expressed in an uncompromising hard hitting way.

''Through art we put our soul on paper/concrete or fabric and share it with the world, this is a very nerve wracking thing to do. It takes more guts than carrying a knife.'' (Danielle Scott 2008)

Money raised will be donated to the Ben Kinsella Fund to fight knife crime.

"…the distorted image of ideal beauty that is never achievable, though laid-on by the world of the media and advertising." (Riedstra, 2007)

Riedstra's ‘Barbs Series’ was shown as part of the Amsterdam International Fashion Week, 2007.
The paintings represent the pain and frustration many women feel when they/we aspire to an unattainable and unrealistic standard of beauty as publicised by the media. They speak of the difficulty in present-day society for women to achieve a true and unadulterated identity of themselves because of the pressures to conform to influences around them/us.

Riedstra’s own background is in both art and theatre, both as a performer and behind the scenes. She has studied Mime & Applied Arts in Tel Aviv, Fine Art at the Royal Academy of the Arts in The Hague, Netherlands. She studied Scenography at HKU in Utrecht, Netherlands, and the Instituto del Teatro, Seville, and has an MA in Scenography from St Martins, London. She is also a qualified teacher of 2d Art. She has exhibited extensively in each of these countries and was invited to show at the Florence Biennale, 2007.

For the forthcoming ‘Barbs’ show Riedstra invited like-minded artists whose work deals with similar issues relating to the body and distorted identity. Her theatrical background informs her vision for the three week exhibition, featuring fashion shows and performances — promising to be an emotional feast for all the senses, and especially the mind.

Exhibition runs from: 22nd of August to 28th of August 2008
Gallery Opening Hours: Sat, Mon to Wed: 2.30 pm - 6.30 pm
Last day of exhibition: Thursday 28th of August from 11.00 am to 5.00 pm

This exhibition is comprised of artworks that are linked less by a common subject matter or theme than by the search for and refinement of an individual visual language.
The 2D and 3D works, in turn, twist traditional conventions of fine art presentation, offer a lateral understanding of contemporary society and art practice and adopt a Surrealist disruption of the physical properties and practical functions of everyday objects.
The 3D works included, constructed in a wide range of materials (bronze, aluminium, concrete, rubber) employ a blend of paradox, metaphor and a quietly insistent humour that engages the viewer in attaching their own interpretations onto what they are looking at. For example: a ‘rubber frame’ is rendered useless for its intended purpose by its very manifestation.
The self-reflexive ‘frame within a frame’ wall based pieces cannot be accurately defined as paintings; they prompt the viewer to consider the ever-changing function of content within an artwork and demonstrate a balance between image and the object.

“We need to interpret interpretations more than to interpret things.”
 -Michel de Montaigne

Brendan Giles is currently a student at Norwich School of Art and Design. This is his first solo exhibition.

Exhibition runs from: 8th to 21st of August 2008

Last day of the exhibition:	Thursday 21st from 11.00 am to 5.00 pm

“Cow’s blood, the Bible and Madonna” are all brought together in a controversial artwork series to be unveiled in central London at Red Gate Gallery, as part of an exhibition to celebrate Madonna’s 50th birthday.

Artist Rush Ounvises, one of the main contributors to the exhibition, whose sixteen paintings include some of the most bizarre objects ever put together, sais:

“This show, ‘Madonna: Mother Of The Universe’, aims to pay an homage to the world’s biggest and most controversial icon in a no holds barred attitude. We wanted to epitomise her edgy individuality and her extreme personality,”

Sexual politics, religion and a sense of rebelliousness are all present in the variety of portrait paintings, photographs, graffiti and multimedia installations, described as “The Post Pop Art” by the artist group ‘The NuBrits’:

“Think Andy Warhol meets Damien Hirst on a subject as unique and complex as Madonna.” (Rush 2007)

The exhibition will be held in August, its opening night intended to coincide with the date of Madonna’s actual birthday.

What if there was a way to start a home-based business, just like more than 50 million households did last year, and participate in a USD $105 billion industry that allows you to:

• Do something you already know how to do
• Work alongside your main job until you've created a large enough secondary income
• Blend family, friends and fun with work and income, allowing more time for both
• Determine your daily activities; instead of someone else determining them for you
• Begin with minimal start up expenses, unlike expensive franchises and other small businesses
• Have more time and money for your family.
• Have creative control over your life and work.
• Benefit from the advantages of owning your own business.
• Care about others and want to make a positive difference contributing to people's lives.

If any or all of the above appeal to you, Arbonne might just be what you've been looking for.

Join us for some wine and refreshments at the Ship in Wandsworth(SW18 1TB) from 12:15-1:30 to see, feel and hear about the Arbonne difference.

Night Flowers, Merlin Glozier

Night Flowers is the latest solo exhibition of internationally renowned artist Merlin Glozier. Descibed as ‘dark, beautiful, poignant and stunningly vulnerable’ by the LA Times, Merlin’s paintings attract a large following and have frequently been featured in many magazines, films and on album covers. Two of Merlin’s pieces are owned by Gwen Stefani who went on to include them in one of her videos and they also appear in the private collections of such people as uber hip architect Seth Stein, video visionary and artist Chris Cunningham, Jenny Frost of Atomic Kitten, as well as Jake Scott, Gavin Rossdale and Davina Talor of the Primrose Hill Set. Merlin explains that her “paintings under scrutiny reveal the disturbance, an injury made visible, defiant, yearning, malevolent but always beautiful”

Ubox Gallery is London’s newest hottest gallery in the heart of the burgeoning cultural area of Vauxhall. With striking views of the city skyline, the gallery is on the first floor of the Ubuilding which houses an eclectic mix of the gallery, a specialist leather shop and leather workshop. Ubox exclusively promotes artists with edgy or challenging work that explores aspects of identity or sexuality.
